Why Do We Have Minds and What on Earth Are They Up To?
Nature starts with very simple things and somehow creates great complexity. Is that how our minds came about? The Prisoner’s Dilemma, animal behavior, “quorum sensing”, the appearance of cooperation in a predator/prey world: each holds clues to help us frame answers and have fun with new questions about ourselves, our relationships and our cultures. Even psychiatry might offer some clues if it could get its act together. David Coursin is a psychiatrist, visual artist, poet, and apprentice musician who has studied these questions in hopes of doing a better job in his work and in understanding himself.
